What goes into a new concrete floor in Hastings?
Concrete floor installation in Hastings means building a new slab from the ground up. We dig out and pack the base, pour and finish the concrete, saw the joints and let it cure, so you get a level floor for a shop, a basement, an outbuilding or a room you're finishing.
Most calls start with an old slab that's cracked and heaving, a dirt or gravel floor in a shed, or a room that needs something solid under new flooring, and Hastings Concrete handles those in Hastings, Grand Island and the cities around them. The price moves with the size of the floor, how much digging and packing the ground needs, the thickness and steel in the slab, the finish, and what goes underneath to keep moisture out. The schedule turns mostly on the weather and the wait while the concrete cures. If it's a garage, our garage floor concrete page covers that job. For anything else, I walk the job, ask how you'll use the floor and write up what's included, so your own figure comes from the estimate.
How do you know it's time for a new concrete floor?
Cracks that keep widening
If the cracks in your old floor are opening up or one side sits higher than the other, the ground under it has usually moved or washed out. Waiting lets the edges chip and lets water get underneath, which speeds up the settling.
Water pooling in low spots
Puddles that sit on the floor after a rain or a hose-down usually mean the slab has sunk in places or was never sloped to drain. Standing water keeps the concrete wet, and over time it works on the surface and the dirt below.
Flooring lifting or smelling damp
Vinyl peeling up, a musty smell under carpet or a white powder on the concrete usually means ground moisture is coming up through the slab with nothing to stop it. Until that's fixed, every new layer of flooring is likely to fail the same way.
How we handle concrete floor installation
It starts with a question, because what flooring you're putting on top decides what we put under the slab to keep moisture out. Then we dig out the soft dirt and pack the subgrade, the soil the slab sits on, and we check where the water runs so the floor doesn't send it toward a wall. That base is buried on day one and it's the first thing people want to trim, but if a budget needs cutting I'd look at the finish first, because a raked-level base settles later and takes the floor with it. Where the floor will carry weight we tie in rebar, steel rods that hold the concrete together under load, and we pour in the cooler part of the day so the top doesn't come out weak and dusty. I'll tell you straight that some cracking is normal, so we saw the control joints quickly, shallow cuts that give a crack a straight line to follow. Then the slab cures, which is the wait while it gains strength before you load it up.
A new floor often comes with work right outside it. If the room opens onto the yard and the stoop is crumbling, we can build new concrete steps on the same project, and for a pool house or a walkout near the water we also pour concrete pool decks with a surface that grips when it's wet.
Smooth troweled floor
This suits basements, finished rooms and anything getting tile, vinyl or a coating, because flooring needs a flat, tight surface to bond to. It's also the easiest floor to sweep and mop.
Broom finish
A broom finish is a light brushed texture that gives your feet some grip, so it fits sheds, barns and porches where the floor gets wet or tracked with mud. It's a bit harder to sweep, and that's the trade for not slipping.
Reinforced slab for heavy use
Shops with heavy tools, vehicles or equipment get a thicker slab with rebar, because a point load can crack a floor built for foot traffic. It costs more in steel and concrete, and it's worth it when the weight is real.

What happens after you call about a concrete floor?
From your first call to the last sweep, here's who you'll talk to and what you'll have in hand at each step.
Call or send the form
I'll ask a few questions about the floor, its size and what's going on top. Then we set a time for me to come out and see it myself.
Walk the floor together
You get a written estimate that says what's included, so you know what you're paying for before we start. We also talk through the choices that change how it turns out, like the mix, the finish and the drainage.
Our crew preps and pours
Our foreman leads the crew through the base, the pour, the joints and the cure. The pour date leans on the weather, so we settle the season with you before we book it.
I check in until finished
I stop by while the work is going on to make sure it's coming together the way we planned. The job's done when the floor is finished and the site is cleaned up.
Why Hastings homeowners call Hastings Concrete for floors
I write your estimate myself
I come out, walk the floor and write the estimate, and our foreman leads the crew that pours it. You're talking to the person who measured your job, not someone reading notes.
Pouring concrete since 2013
We've been in business since 2013, and before that I spent years running crews for another contractor. That's where I learned the base and the water matter as much as the finish.
Licensed, insured and easy to check
We're licensed and insured. Nebraska also requires contractors to register with the Nebraska Department of Labor, though registration doesn't guarantee anyone's work, so ask any contractor how they'll prep your base too.
Satisfaction guaranteed on every job
That's our promise, and it starts with telling you up front what concrete does, cracks included. The plan and the price are on paper before we start.
Send us your floor's size and use, or call (402) 512-8901, and I'll set a time to come take a look.
Concrete floors and base work on Hastings soil
The ground is the first thing I look at on a floor job here, because several soils in Adams County, the Hastings, Crete and Fillmore soils among them, have moderate to high shrink-swell potential. That means they swell when they're wet and shrink as they dry, and a floor laid on that dirt can rise and drop with it. So we dig past the loose top, pack a firm base and talk with you about how much prep your ground needs before we price it.
On floor jobs we see a lot of shops, garages and outbuildings where the yard drains toward the slab, so we check the water's path before we set the forms. We meet the same kind of ground on jobs in Grand Island and all around Hastings.
Questions about concrete floors in Hastings
Will my new concrete floor crack?
Probably a little, because the concrete industry's floor guide says owners should expect some cracking in any concrete floor, even with good design and building. Random cracks look bad and are a nuisance to keep clean, but they generally don't weaken the concrete. Wire mesh won't stop cracking either, though it tends to keep cracks and joints from opening up, which is why the joints are the real plan.
How much does a concrete floor cost per square foot in Hastings?
An installed concrete slab across the US usually costs about $6 to $12 per square foot, and that's the national picture, not our price. Where yours lands depends on the size, how much base work the ground needs, the thickness and steel, the finish and the moisture barrier. Your written estimate gives you the figure for your floor.
Can you pour a concrete floor in a Hastings winter?
Yes, as long as the new concrete is protected from freezing, and cold-weather guidance puts that at about two days after the pour for most concrete kept at 50°F. The ground also has to be free of snow, ice and frost, and the same guidance advises covering it with insulated blankets a few days ahead. If you're booking a cold-season pour, ask us how we'll keep your slab from freezing through those first days.
Who has to be registered to pour a concrete floor in Nebraska?
The company you hire does, but you don't if you're working on your own property, because Nebraska law says that person isn't a contractor under the registration act. The same goes for someone earning less than five thousand dollars a year from construction work. A contractor working under more than one name needs a registration number for each one, so ask for the number tied to the name on your bid.
What is the best way to keep moisture out of a concrete floor with flooring on top?
Put a vapor barrier, a sheet that stops ground moisture coming up, right under the slab, because the concrete industry's floor guide says coverings get the most protection when it sits in direct contact with the concrete. The same guide says plain polyethylene, used in the past, shouldn't be considered for this. If you're planning flooring, ask which barrier is going under your slab.
What causes a new concrete floor to crack or wear out early?
Bad timing on pour day is a common cause, because the floor guide says poorly timed finishing, jointing and curing can lead to cracking, a surface that wears fast, high and low spots, and poor drainage. The joints are part of that clock, and industry guidance says regular saw-cut joints should go in within 4 to 12 hours after the concrete is finished.
